Tanning

Being in a high school you are bound to hear of girls that tan.  You can tell who goes "fake baking" because they are orange all year round.  It seems like some girls actually get addicted and go way too much.  I understand when the sun goes away in the winter and you want to get some color back, but to the point of orange is ridiculous.  I'm so happy that summer is finally here and everyone can tan outside and get a more natural color from it.  -Lindsey 6/5

Beards and Mustaches

As boys get into high school they start getting facial hair that some shave and others let turn into beards or mustaches.  Right now the lacrosse players in school made a pact that none of them would shave as long as they were still in sectionals.  I've seen several boys this week who have grown out mustaches and beards that don't usually have them and I really can't wait until they are allowed to shave it off.  I really think they look gross and makes them look dirty.  Mustaches especially are really weird and make them look more like a creepy old man than a high school student.  I can't think of anyone that actually looks good with one, they just need to go.  -Lindsey 6/5

White for More Than Weddings

Because it's prom season I always like to look through pictures and see which dresses people wore.  As I was looking through this year I noticed a lot of girls wearing white dresses.  They all look great in them, but I wonder if while they were picking them out they thought about the fact that white is the color you wear on your wedding day.  It seems funny that you would choose to wear that to a prom when you know it should be dedicated to one specific day in your life.   _-Lindsey 6/5

Summer Shoes

Summer shoes are the most fun to shop for.  There's regular flip flops, decorated sandals, heels, and wedges.  Each type has an important purpose.  I like it when girls mix it up between all of the different kinds.  It gets so boring to simply wear plain black sandals every single day.  You have to add some flavor to whatever outfit you're planning on wearing.
On the other hand, my history teacher wears wedges every single day.  It actually doesn't bother me that she doesn't rotate between different types because she has so many different patterns and colors of wedges that it really works for her.  That's what I love about shoes.  They allow everyone to be unique and different in whatever way they choose. -Lindsey 5/30

School Dress Code

Now that the weather is getting warmer, kids at school are starting to wear short dresses, short skirts, and short shorts.  The principals, however, do not like this transition.  At school it seems like everyday you hear of several girls getting called down to the office to change their outfit because the principal felt it was too inappropriate for school.  I really think that the school is being too harsh on this subject.  It's hot out!  Give the students a break.  I can understand if someone wore a skirt or dress that was too short or revealing, but shorts?  Come on.  How can shorts be that short that it is considered distracting to others trying to learn?  I'm not really seeing that.  I've never seen a girl wear a pair of shorts in school that I thought were so short that it was actually distracting me.  Shorts cover everything so I don't see the problem here.  I think a new policy on the summertime dress code desperately needs to be discussed and put into place. -Lindsey 5/30

White Back in

It's finally Memorial Day, so those of you who follow the fashion rules closely can finally wear white pants with a guilt-free conscious.  The unwritten rule is no white pants or shorts after Labor Day and before Memorial Day.  It finally feels like summer now that white is in.  Everyone can break out their white pants and shorts this week and look good doing it!  -Lindsey 5/30

Nails!

I love the look of freshly polished nails.  Something about that makes the girl seem like she knows how to take care of herself and she does it well.  I think it adds a little something extra when you have your fingers and toes painted.  I love the look of french manicures and I also like it when the color of the polish matches the person's outfit.  I think especially in the summertime girls should always make sure to have their nails polished because it definitely completes the look.  -Lindsey 5/22

Hair Extensions

As I walk through the halls I see girls who have the most beautiful curls in their hair.  I always wondered how they were able to do that because no matter what I tried, I could never get my hair to look like that.  I finally realized that all of these girls wear extensions in their hair and that's how they got it so long and curly.  I thought this was the coolest thing especially because some are as easy as a clip.  Easy to put in your hair and easy to take out as well.  I love the look of long hair on girls so I think extensions are a great idea.  -Lindsey 5/22

Girls perspective on Boys

I think boys definitely have it the hardest when it comes to fashion.  They want to look nice so they can get girls attention, but if they look too nice it gets the girls attention in the wrong way.  A guy that is really into fashion isn't looked upon as stylish, but rather girly.  From a girls perspective, I hate seeing guys in vibrant or pastel colors.  I feel like it takes away from their manliness.  When I see them dress up for sports I think it always looks the best when they go for a simple button down collared shirt.  When they start sporting sweater vests it kind of makes you see them in a different light that I don't think they necessarily want to be seen in.  I know it's hard on boys because for the most part they just don't know.  Those are the boys that I like though, the ones who go simple and casual.   -Lindsey 5/22

Curly Vs. Straight

Every morning when I wake up the first thing I decide is whether to wear my hair straight or curly.  I used to always be jealous of people who had naturally curly hair because I love how different it looks on everyone.  Lately, however, I feel like straight hair is definitely the way to go.  I'm not sure if I just had a change of opinion or if it's just more popular now.  Whatever the reason, I really feel that this summer the hair to be jealous of will be straight. -Lindsey 5/15

Summer Dress Code

As the weather gets nicer girls are starting to make the switch from jeans to shorts.  The school, however, does not support this trend.  Many girls have been called down by the principal's office this year for wearing extremely short shorts.  I understand that they want kids to look respectable at school, but it's getting ridiculous the number of girls they've pulled aside.  I also feel that there is a huge difference between short shorts and a short skirt.  Short shorts are really just revealing more leg, I think it's really insignificant and the school of becoming way to harsh. -Lindsey 5/15

Prom Hairstyles

Because senior prom was last night I thought it would be appropriate to talk about the different fashion trends that I observed there.  One of the main things that could go wrong for a girl is the hair.  I've heard several stories about girls who go to the salon and pay around $100 to get their hair professionally done, and then they get in the car and start crying.  Some girls are so afraid of speaking up that they end up wasting money.  I'm lucky, though, that I have a good enough relationship with my hairdresser to not feel rude if I want her to change something.  I'm so thankful that I had a good experience with hair this year! -Lindsey 5/15

Shorts

High school girls are sporting all different types of shorts lately.  The most popular are short shorts and bermuda shorts.  I personally hate the look of bermuda shorts.  I think they look extremely awkward on people because they are tight all the way down to their knees.  They look like mom shorts.  I like jean short shorts the best because they act as a substitute for jeans in the warm weather and, similarly, can be worn with pretty much any shirt.   -Lindsey

Bathing Suit Season

The warm weather has brought excitement to everybody.  As pools are opening up and people are taking their boat covers off, the bathing suit question is lingering in everyones mind.  Should you wear a bikini, tankini, or monokini?  The monokini with the cut-outs has been a new trend since last year.  I think it's an interesting new look, but i wouldn't recommend it to everybody.  You definitely have to be thin in order to wear this bathing suit.   -Lindsey

What Season is it?

As the seasons change in the Northeast so frequently it's hard to know when they right time is to switch from boots to flip flops.  Some people wait too long while others are a little too early, but what about the people who refuse to acknowledge that there are any seasons at all?

I've seen poeple where boots in the summer or flip flops all through the winter and it just looks out of place.  Aren't they hot wearing furry Ugg boots in the summer heat? And aren't they cold wearing flip flops while the snow keeps piling down?  Besides the uncomfortable feeling, they just aren't a good look.  I know sometimes it's hard to tell when to transfer over but as long as it's around the same time as everyone else then everything is okay.  No one should be wearing just flip flops or just uggs for an entire year.

The "In" Store

In the past few years Forever21 has gone from a small fall-back store to one of the most popular stores for high school students to shop at.  It's become such a huge success that most stores are so large you could get lost in them.  It gives so many options for clothing ranging from fancy dresses to workout clothes.  Forever21 also includes the perfect accessories to go with almost any outfit.  The have all different types of jewelry, hair pieces, make-up, and even shoes.
Although Forever21 is predominantly a store for girls, several boys shop there as well.  They have a smaller section for boys but it includes a variety of different options as well.  Preppy boys are the typical type to shop at Forever21.
I think it's good that so many people are interested in shopping at Forever21.  It has such a unique style and it's really interesting to see all of the different outfits that kids put together from their stores.

Snapbacks Are In!

Snap-backs are the new thing that seem to be in style for boys at this time. They're similar to fitted hats, but seem to be more comforable.
Fitted hats are more expensieve and not as easy to purchase. You can buy snap-backs in a lot of hat stores. With fitted hats you need to purchase them online and know your exact size. Snap-backs or more easily adjustable and convenient. There are however many different websites you can purchase both hats on like ecapcity, which is a hat website with both types available. They range in price from $30 and up. They're cheap and in style!

Men in Pink

"Real men wear pink."  A popular saying for men who are into fashion and don't want to be judged for whatever they want to wear.
I think men look fine in pink as long as it's a light tint and they don't go overboard with it.  Steven Tyler, however, is not ashamed of wearing hot pink..with ruffles!  He wore this shirt confident on American Idol with no signs of embarrassment.
Although I obviously really like Steven Tyler (Who doesn't?), sometimes his outfits are a little to crazy for me.  He is a man and should dress like one.  I know he is an artist, but you'd think that would only help his fashion sense because he probably has many people giving him advice as to what to wear.  What are these people thinking?  Hot pink ruffles is not a good look for men, I don't care what their job is.

Prom Dresses

Prom season is rapidly approaching for most high schools.  As girls struggle to find dates or limos, dresses tend to be the number one problem.  Everyone wants to find a dress that is perfect for them and also fashionable so they aren't embarrassed in front of their friends.
I think to help with this issue there are a couple of guidelines that every girl should follow.  Always bring a friend because they know whats in style for young people.  You should also always bring your mother because moms are always honest as to what looks good and appropriate on their daughters.
Lastly, I think that big, poofy dresses are way out of style! They look good for your wedding day, but this is only prom.  Prom is also a big dancing event and who wants to or is able to dance with someone who has a huge dress surrounding them?  Girls should steer towards straight dresses, fitted dresses, or short dresses.  Hopefully at this years prom everyone will look beautiful and fashionable!

Crocs

Crocs were a very popular shoe when they first came out in 2002.  They mainly attracted girls, but some boys wore them as well.  Now, they are no longer popular and are way out of style.  I don't understand why people think they look good.  The only reason that someone should feel the need to wear Crocs is if they were using them in the place of water shoes.  Even if utilizing them as water shoes, men still shouldn't wear them.  If people own Crocs, they should only wear them when they are not in public.  -Lindsey

Boys Fashion

Boys interested in fashion seems to be the new thing at our suburban high school. Usually it's the girl's who are up to date with the latest trends and making sure that their outfits match. However, high school junior, Jackson , has just as good, if not better, fashion sense than most girls. He claims snap-backs are the new trend for the new hats boys are wearing. Jackson says the stores he most frequently shops at include Polo, Macys, Forever 21, and Eblens. Although Jackson does not pick out his outfits the night before he goes to school, he still manages to match his shirt, hat, and shoes to all be about the same color.

High school juniors Brian  and Trevor also admitted to having an interest in fashion. Although they aren't as focused on matching their shoes or hat as Jackson, they still present themselves in a very well-dressed manner. Brian and Trevor say that their top stores to shop at are Kohls, Marshalls, and Target. Both say that they don't go shopping very often, and when they do they tend to not spend very much. Trevor does, however, admit to picking out his outfit the night before school.
Most boys like to put on an act that their not very into fashion. This year boys seem more into fashion and take pride in being "fly."
